Dachshunds Take the Top Spot as Favourite
Katy AbramsDachshunds Take the Top Spot as Favourite Dog Breed of 2025 – But, There’s More to the Story
There’s no denying it — dachshunds are everywhere right now. According to The Times, they’ve firmly taken the top spot as one of the UK’s most loved dog breeds for 2025, adored for their long bodies, soulful eyes and huge personalities packed into small frames.
But behind their surge in popularity is a story that deserves more attention — and it’s one that’s very close to my heart.
A Personal Connection to the Breed
Alongside running my small business, I’m also a trustee for The Red Foundation, a UK charity dedicated to helping dachshunds in need. Being involved in rescue means seeing beyond the social media trends and witnessing the real-life impact of the breed’s popularity.
In recent years, and especially during 2025, there has been a significant increase in dachshunds being surrendered and rehomed. Many of these dogs are victims of impulse buying and unrealistic expectations.
Why Are Dachshunds Ending Up in Rescue?
Dachshunds are often chosen for their size and looks, without a full understanding of their needs. Common reasons we see dogs coming into rescue include:
- Underestimated training and enrichment needs
- Separation anxiety due to strong attachment to owners
- Reactivity or excessive barking
- A lack of awareness around breed-specific health issues, particularly IVDD
- Homes unprepared for their stubborn, strong-willed personalities
These aren’t problem dogs — they’re misunderstood ones.
Dachshund Traits People Don’t Always Expect
Dachshunds may be small, but they are far from low-maintenance. Some of their most lovable traits can become challenging without the right support.
- Deeply loyal and people-focused, which can lead to anxiety when left alone
- Intelligent and independent, requiring patience and consistency in training
- Naturally vocal, as alert little watchdogs
- In need of regular mental enrichment to stay calm and fulfilled
- Bold and fearless, often unaware of their own size
Popularity Comes With Responsibility
Dachshunds becoming the favourite breed of 2025 should be a positive thing — but only if it’s matched with education and responsible ownership. Breed rescues like The Red Foundation are under increasing pressure as more dogs need help.
If you’re thinking about adding a dachshund to your family, please take the time to research the breed fully, consider adopting from rescue, and be honest about the commitment involved.
Dachshunds are loyal, funny, stubborn and endlessly loving companions — but they thrive best with owners who truly understand them. When we look beyond the trend, we give these incredible dogs the lifelong homes they deserve.
